According to Wong, ministers are tasked with setting priorities, making strategic decisions, and grappling with tough choices, which necessitates a remuneration package that attracts qualified candidates.
Wong highlighted that while public service should be viewed as a calling, monetary compensation remains a vital factor in persuading capable individuals to enter politics. He cautioned that the requirement for excessive personal and financial sacrifices could deter talented people from pursuing political careers. The government has recently adopted recommendations from a delayed review of salaries for political office holders and Members of Parliament, with Wong indicating that these adjustments are crucial to ensuring that political leaders’ service terms stay aligned with evolving realities.
The Prime Minister also warned of the potential repercussions of weak political leadership, which could detrimentally impact the quality of the civil service. He stressed that competent public officers need to be led by individuals they respect and can learn from. Persistent poor leadership, he noted, might drive talented officials away or reduce their willingness to embrace challenging responsibilities.
Character, Wong asserted, remains the foremost criterion when appointing ministers. He insisted that individuals lacking in integrity, values, and a commitment to public service should not be considered for ministerial roles, irrespective of their abilities. Nevertheless, Wong pointed out that integrity alone is insufficient; ministers must also possess strong judgment, competence, and leadership skills to effectively manage governmental demands.
