This move comes as part of efforts to bolster the enduring partnership between the two nations. Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, noted the shared challenges faced by both countries, which are small states with constrained domestic markets and limited natural resources. He remarked that their openness and international networks have enabled them to evolve into significant financial and business centers catering to broader regional markets.
Wong underscored the robust economic relationship between the two countries, highlighting that Luxembourg stands as the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. The nations are also committed to strengthening the connection between ASEAN and the European Union. Both Singapore and Luxembourg advocate for regional integration and are united in their interest in maintaining an open, rules-based global framework.
During an official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their talks delved into geopolitical issues and discussed strategies for fostering stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. This visit coincides with the commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The recent opening of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore underscores its commitment to enhancing engagement not only with Singapore but also across the broader region. This initiative is seen as a strong indication of Luxembourg’s intention to expand its regional footprint. During his visit, Frieden is also slated to present the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will address Europe’s role and its autonomy in the evolving global landscape.
