The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has made a significant stride in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), Valour. This achievement comes just nine months after the introduction of its first ship, Victory. The launch ceremony took place at Benoi Shipyard, showcasing the rapid advancements in Singapore’s naval capabilities. According to ST Engineering CEO Vincent Chong, the experience gained during the construction of Victory enabled the team to accelerate the launch of Valour by three months, a trend expected to continue with the remaining vessels in the class.
The new MRCVs are designed to succeed the aging Victory-class missile corvettes, featuring the ability to integrate with various unmanned systems and perform diverse mission types. The fleet, which includes Victory, Valour, Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, is set for progressive delivery starting from 2028. At the launch event, Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam highlighted the increasing importance of maritime security amid global tensions and disruptions in crucial sea lanes, such as the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels, with an operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles and endurance of over 21 days at sea, are expected to bolster the protection of Singapore’s maritime interests.
Construction is already underway for the third and fourth vessels in the MRCV class. Minister Shanmugam praised Singapore’s capability to design, build, and maintain sophisticated naval warships domestically, attributing this success to decades of investment in the nation’s defense industry. The project demands extensive systems integration, including managing power, cooling, and mission module requirements, as noted by the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned 19-year veteran of the navy and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance, has been named the commanding officer of Valour. His vision is to cultivate a crew with a pioneering spirit, dedicated to shaping the future of the Republic of Singapore Navy. With the ongoing developments in the MRCV program, Singapore continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing its maritime defense capabilities.
