The launch of the new 62-mile Steel Cotton Rail Trail is perfectly timed for the autumn season. This 14-section route, winding through the Peak District between Manchester and Sheffield, is described as an “almost perfect” way to experience the “magical” moods of autumn.
The trail, which is linked by railway stations, offers a full spectrum of autumn scenery. Walkers can choose sections that take them through woodlands, where the “golds, reds and ochres” of leaf litter are on full display. This year’s “mast year” means a satisfying crunch of acorns and beech nuts underfoot.
The northern autumn weather—low clouds, mizzle, and mist—only adds to the atmosphere, filtering the world in grey but for the glow of the leaves. When the mist burns off, walkers on higher sections are rewarded with sudden, expansive views over the green valleys.
The trail’s 14 sections allow visitors to tailor their walk. Whether you prefer a level stroll along the historic Peak Forest Tramway or a brisk climb up a green lane, there is a walk to suit your energy level. The route is dotted with charming villages and pubs for a rewarding rest stop.
This new, well-marked trail is an invitation to get outdoors. It’s a versatile and accessible way to explore the “eye-calming” landscapes and rich history of the Peak District as the seasons turn.
