Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make a historic official visit to Timor-Leste from July 2 to 3, marking the first occasion a Singaporean leader has traveled to the Southeast Asian nation. During his visit, Prime Minister Wong will engage in discussions with Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. In recognition of Singapore’s longstanding support for Timor-Leste’s development and its integration into the ASEAN community, Wong is expected to be honored with the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the country’s highest accolade.
The visit aims to bolster bilateral ties with the signing of a memorandum of understanding and the establishment of a new framework for regular consultations. Both nations are keen to enhance cooperation in multiple areas, including governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. This marks a continuation of the partnership that has seen Singapore provide significant support to Timor-Leste through training programs, technical assistance, and peacekeeping efforts since the latter’s early post-independence years.
With Timor-Leste’s recent entry into ASEAN as its newest member, the collaboration between the two countries has intensified. Prime Minister Wong’s visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic connections and support Timor-Leste’s ongoing integration into regional institutions, providing a platform for deeper engagement and cooperation.
In addition to formal meetings and discussions, Wong will attend a state banquet and is scheduled to meet with Singaporean citizens residing in Timor-Leste. This visit underscores the significance of Singapore’s role in regional diplomacy and its commitment to fostering strong relationships with neighboring countries. Accompanying Wong will be senior ministers and officials from Singapore, while Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister during Wong’s absence.
