Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore has called upon young individuals from varied backgrounds to engage with the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), emphasizing the importance of diverse viewpoints within the party. During the celebration of the Young PAP’s 40th anniversary, Wong highlighted the necessity of diversity in thought for the party to continue evolving and to effectively tackle the challenges that Singapore will face in the future. He encouraged citizens, including those who may not entirely agree with the PAP on certain issues, to contribute their ideas and take part in shaping the nation’s future.

Addressing concerns that some young Singaporeans might perceive the PAP as an established entity not in need of new members, Wong countered that Singapore still holds a position as a “global underdog” and emphasized the importance of each generation bringing fresh leadership and innovation. His remarks aimed to dispel the notion that the party is closed to new ideas, suggesting instead that participation from younger demographics is vital for ongoing renewal.

Wong also cautioned against the dangers of divisive and confrontational politics, reaffirming the PAP’s commitment to addressing issues through cooperation, practical measures, and consensus-building rather than fostering public discontent or political division. His statements underscored a preference for unity and pragmatic solutions as the party looks to navigate future challenges.

In conjunction with the anniversary event, the Young PAP Academy was launched, aiming to provide leadership training and mentorship opportunities for youth activists within the party. Additionally, the introduction of the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was announced, which will offer S$5,000 grants to support community-driven initiatives led by young party members. These programs are designed to nurture and empower the next generation of leaders within the PAP, further embedding the value of diversity and innovation in its ranks.
