During a recent visit to Brunei, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations. The visit coincided with the Sultan’s 80th birthday celebrations, providing a platform for both leaders to discuss and emphasize the significance of their countries’ longstanding partnership.
The discussions underscored several key future milestones, notably the 50th anniversary of defense cooperation set for 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027. Both leaders expressed a commitment to deepening collaboration in critical areas such as energy, food security, supply chain resilience, and fostering people-to-people exchanges.
Lee’s visit also included meetings with Brunei’s Crown Prince and senior ministers. These discussions focused on initiatives to bolster ties between the next generation of leaders and youth from both nations, reflecting a shared vision for future cooperation and understanding.
In addition to attending official birthday events, Lee engaged with Singapore Armed Forces personnel who are undergoing training in Brunei. This visit highlighted the ongoing defense collaboration between the two nations. Furthermore, Lee took the opportunity to visit a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, symbolizing the diverse areas of cooperation between the countries.
