President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national calamity across the Philippines following the widespread devastation caused by Typhoon Tino and in anticipation of the potential Super Typhoon Uwan.
Speaking after a briefing at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in Quezon City, Marcos said nearly 10 to 12 regions are expected to be affected. “Because of the scope of the areas that have been hit by Tino and those likely to be hit by Uwan, I approved the proposal to declare a national calamity,” he stated.
The declaration allows government agencies to mobilize emergency funds and expedite relief operations for affected communities. Marcos emphasized the importance of preparedness, noting that efforts are underway to strengthen defenses before Uwan’s arrival. “If we anticipate well and prepare well, we can do a lot to lessen the impact,” he said.
As of Thursday morning, 114 deaths were reported in Cebu province, while weather authorities warned that Super Typhoon Uwan may soon enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) with a high likelihood of landfall. The system, currently a tropical depression, is moving west-northwest over the Philippine Sea.
