Taiwan has urged Japan and the Philippines to ensure that their upcoming discussions on maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) do not infringe on Taiwan’s rights and interests in the surrounding waters. This request comes in light of a recent declaration by Japan and the Philippines indicating their intention to initiate talks aimed at delineating maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims as per international law. Experts have pointed out that some areas within the proposed zones may overlap with Taiwan’s claims.
Officials from Taiwan have stated that both Japan and the Philippines have provided assurances that any agreements reached in their negotiations will not be legally binding on third parties and will adhere to established international legal standards. Taiwan’s government reiterated its commitment to engaging with both nations to protect its maritime interests, including fishing rights and access to resources in the disputed areas. It was also emphasized that existing agreements Taiwan holds with Japan and the Philippines will continue to be honored.
This development occurs amidst broader regional tensions, particularly following China’s assertion of claims over waters east of Taiwan, accompanied by coast guard patrols in the region. Taiwan has firmly rejected these claims, maintaining its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, Philippine officials have clarified that formal negotiations have yet to commence and have underscored that it is premature to predict any potential implications of future agreements on fishing rights or territorial claims.
