The Philippine government expressed its hope for an impartial impeachment process for Vice President Sara Duterte, following recent shifts in the Senate’s leadership that have raised public concerns. Malacañang emphasized the importance of fairness as the case progresses through the legislative body.
Claire Castro, the Palace Press Officer, confirmed that the impeachment proceedings are now under the Senate’s jurisdiction. She reiterated that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has chosen not to interfere with the proceedings, respecting the separation of powers within the government.
“Our hope is that if this matter reaches the Senate, the senators will serve as fair judges, acting in the best interest of the public,” Castro stated during a press briefing. Her comments highlight the administration’s stance on maintaining judicial independence and integrity throughout the process.
Castro further clarified the roles within the government by noting, “The House of Representatives has fulfilled its duty, and this responsibility does not fall within the President’s mandate.” This statement underscores the legislative branch’s authority in the matter and the executive branch’s commitment to non-interference.
